Shafaq News – The Public Security Directorate in Deir ez-Zor announced on Sunday the arrest of Abdul Karim Ahmed al-Hamada, a former Brigadier General with close ties to Maher al-Assad, the brother of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), al-Hamada was previously responsible for managing settlement agreements under the former regime, coordinating reconciliation efforts with opposition groups. He also acted as an advisor, facilitating communication between former Syrian regime officers and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in key security and military operations.
Tensions Over Military Settlements
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syria’s military operations directorate set up settlement centers to allow former regime members to surrender their weapons. However, resistance from some factions has resulted in violent clashes across multiple provinces.
Al-Hamada’s detention signals a continued crackdown on figures associated with the former regime and those resisting post-war reconciliation efforts.
