Hector Lopez, a former detention officer at the Corpus Christi City Detention Center, was arrested last week on charges of violating an inmate’s civil rights by allegedly stealing $150 in cash from the person while they were in custody.
According to an arrest affidavit, the incident occurred earlier this month when a detainee reported that $150 in cash, which he had on him at the time of his arrest, was missing when he was released from the facility.
Surveillance footage reviewed by the detention center supervisor reportedly showed Lopez removing bills from the man’s wallet during the intake process and concealing them in his shirt.
Lopez had been employed as a City Detention Officer for only four months before he quit on March 13, the affidavit revealed. The Corpus Christi City Detention Center serves as a temporary holding facility for individuals arrested by Corpus Christi Police before they appear before a magistrate.
Lopez now faces charges for the theft and violation of the inmate’s civil rights. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine if there were any other victims.
