Florida Man Arrested for Elaborate Facebook Car Rental Scam

Maurice Vorroto charged with multiple counts after victims face violent confrontations

by Sophia Bennett

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Eighteen-year-old Maurice Vorroto is facing serious legal troubles following his arrest for an elaborate Facebook scam that turned victim against victim, with some incidents escalating to violence.

Prosecutors described the situation as a “recipe for disaster.” Victims reported that complete strangers were arriving at their homes, believing they were there to rent cars—often without knowing they had been scammed.

According to authorities, Vorroto posted fake rental ads using his neighbors’ vehicles in Dania Beach, collecting deposits while providing his neighbors’ addresses for pick-up. One resident noted she had eight strangers show up at her door over three weeks, all looking to rent cars.

Danny Rios, one of the victims, wanted to rent a blue Mercedes-Benz for a trip to Orlando and ended up paying Vorroto $370. When he arrived at the designated address—just down the street from Vorroto’s home—he realized he had been duped. “I’m mad,” Rios said. “It’s very good they arrested this scammer.”

Robert Vazquez expressed relief, as his son’s car was damaged after a misunderstanding with one of Vorroto’s online renters.

Deputies tracked Vorroto down using phone numbers and emails provided by several victims, issuing subpoenas and warrants to companies like Google, Zelle, and Facebook. Investigators pieced together evidence linking him to the scheme, discovering that Vorroto had created multiple fake Facebook accounts, often keeping backup accounts in case any were taken down.

Vorroto now faces a total of 13 charges and has been granted a $50,000 bond. After hearing the charges in court, his mother focused on securing his release and requested a bond reduction. Another hearing is scheduled for a later date.
