In a breakthrough investigation, Chennai City Police have arrested five individuals, including Preetham Ganguly, the manager of a jewellery workshop, for stealing gold and diamonds from the White Fire Diamond workshop in T. Nagar. The theft came to light following an internal audit, which revealed that the gang had stolen over 1,240 grams of gold and 140 carats of diamonds over a period of time.
The police’s swift investigation led to the recovery of 259 grams of gold and 37 carats of diamonds. The recovered items were part of the stolen inventory, which had a total value running into lakhs of rupees. Authorities confirmed that the accused were all employees of the jewellery workshop, making the crime an inside job.
The stolen precious metals and stones were allegedly removed from the workshop by Preetham Ganguly and his accomplices. As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that the gang had been siphoning off the gold and diamonds, which were meant for sale, and diverting them for personal gain.
The authorities, after gathering critical evidence, made the arrests and seized the stolen items. The five arrested individuals have been charged with theft and robbery, and further investigations are underway to determine if the gang had accomplices outside the workshop.
This case highlights the growing issue of employee-related thefts in businesses dealing with high-value commodities. The Chennai City Police have urged workshop owners and businesses to implement more stringent security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
