Five Arrested for Smuggling Ganja in Sriperumbudur Industrial Areas, Including a West Bengal Resident
In a successful operation by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), five individuals, including Kanchan Paul, a West Bengal native, were arrested for smuggling ganja in the Sriperumbudur industrial area. The group was caught with 5kg of dry ganja, which was intended for sale to local workers and youths in nearby areas.
The arrests came after police acted on a tip-off regarding drug smuggling in industrial zones like Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Ambattur. These areas, known for their large factories, have seen a rise in drug abuse among workers and students. The arrested individuals were identified as Andavan (28), Dhanush (21), Samuel (20), Sanjay (20), and Kanchan Paul (23), who is from West Bengal.
Authorities revealed that Kanchan Paul, a known drug trafficker, had trained the group in selling ganja and encouraged them to target migrant workers from states like Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. One of the suspects confessed to having been addicted to ganja before turning to its sale to feed his addiction.
The police further stated that Kanchan Paul had supplied 10kg of ganja the previous week, with 5kg already sold to factory workers, students, and others. The remaining stock was seized as the group attempted to dispose of it. The drugs were packed in small portions, sold at prices ranging from Rs500 to Rs1,000. The group reportedly preferred to make sales over the weekends due to higher demand.
The authorities have expressed their commitment to addressing the rising drug abuse in industrial areas, and further investigations are underway to identify other individuals in the network.
