Filipino Man Arrested for Necklace Snatching in Vietnam

Gaston Galam Ricky, a 33-year-old Filipino man, was arrested in Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, after allegedly snatching a necklace from fellow Filipino citizen, Liezel Kindica, on December 21, 2024. The incident occurred in the Tay Ho Commune area of Tho Xuan District, where Kindica was riding her motorbike at around 9:15 p.m. when Ricky approached from behind.

Ricky reportedly cut into Kindica’s path, forcing her to stop abruptly, and then grabbed her necklace, valued at approximately VND 24 million (around US$940). He then sped away. Kindica reported the crime to local authorities at around 10:00 p.m., prompting an immediate investigation.

Following a review of surveillance footage and gathering additional information, police identified Ricky as the suspect. Investigators found that Ricky and Kindica were previously acquainted through Ricky’s romantic partner.

Police soon discovered that Ricky was hiding in Hanoi, intending to flee to the Philippines. Less than 20 hours after the crime, they arrested him on December 22 as he traveled back to Tho Xuan.

Upon his arrest, Ricky confessed to the crime. The stolen necklace was recovered and returned to Kindica. The police have praised the officers involved for their swift and efficient investigation and capture of the suspect.
