Angel Joel Diaz, 36, also known as “Guero”, has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for his role in a large-scale fentanyl pill manufacturing and distribution operation. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the sentencing on December 8, 2024.

Diaz pleaded guilty in April 2024 to several charges, including one count of distribution and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, two counts related to distribution and possession of 400 grams or more of fentanyl, and additional charges involving methamphetamine and methadone. The charges stem from an investigation that began in January 2023.

The DEA’s undercover operation revealed Diaz was actively involved in the manufacturing and sale of counterfeit prescription pills. On January 11, 2023, an undercover officer bought 208 counterfeit pills from Diaz, which contained fentanyl and methamphetamine. During the transaction, Diaz openly acknowledged the pills contained fentanyl, referring to their potency, and claimed they were “knocking people down in New York.”

Further undercover transactions on January 27 and February 7, 2023, revealed Diaz was distributing thousands of these counterfeit pills. On February 14, 2023, Diaz even sent a photo of the pills to the officer, describing the unpleasant process of making the drugs.

Diaz was arrested on February 15, 2023, while in possession of a shopping bag containing 31,142 fentanyl pills, along with other drugs, including methamphetamine and methadone. A search of Diaz’s home in Haverhill led to the discovery of pill presses, additional pills, chemicals, and counterfeit pill stamps used in the manufacturing process.

Authorities seized more than six kilograms of fentanyl, along with significant amounts of methamphetamine and methadone, contributing to the lengthy prison sentence. The case highlights the growing dangers posed by fentanyl and the significant law enforcement efforts to combat its distribution.
