The Benin Zonal office of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has successfully secured the conviction of 35-year-old Fasa Sandra for trafficking individuals for prostitution. The conviction was announced by the Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Ganiu Alao Aganran, in a statement released in Benin City.
Sandra was sentenced by a Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, to two years in prison with the option of a N250,000 fine. She was found guilty of exporting persons for prostitution and tampering with evidence and witnesses in 2021.
Sandra was arrested alongside 26-year-old Omengor Chinonso, who jumped bail and failed to appear in court for the verdict. The crimes committed by both defendants fall under sections 14(b) and 34 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.
Justice F.A. Olubanjo, who presided over the case, has reserved the ruling on Chinonso’s case, pending her return to court.
NAPTIP’s Aganran assured the public that the agency would continue efforts to bring Chinonso back to court to face justice.
