Farouq Qassem Al-Hamadi, a former member of Syria’s People’s Assembly under Bashar al-Assad’s regime, was arrested by Syrian security forces in Daraa city on charges of extortion and drug trafficking. The arrest, which took place following an extensive surveillance operation, is a part of the ongoing crackdown on individuals connected to the fallen regime.

Al-Hamadi, a native of Inkhil in northern Daraa, is accused of abusing his position for personal gain. Reports indicate that he exploited his political influence to extort money from families seeking the release of their loved ones detained by the previous Assad regime. These families were misled with false promises of securing their relatives’ freedom in exchange for large sums of money.

Additionally, Al-Hamadi faces allegations of involvement in drug trafficking and other forms of corruption. According to Arab media reports, he is seen as a key figure in the political and economic corruption that plagued Daraa during the regime’s rule.

This arrest comes amid an increased focus by Syrian authorities on individuals involved in crimes committed under the Assad regime. Security forces have been conducting operations to target those linked to corruption and criminal activities across various provinces, signaling a continued effort to dismantle the remnants of the former regime.

Al-Hamadi’s interrogation is expected to reveal further details of his alleged role in these illicit activities as authorities work to uncover the extent of corruption in the region.
