A 39-year-old man was arrested on Saturday after attempting to scam an elderly woman on Long Island, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
The incident began when the 84-year-old woman received a phone call around 7:30 p.m. from a man claiming that her grandson had been arrested and needed $9,800 for bail. Suspicious of the call, the woman reached out to the police for help.
Officers arrived at the woman’s residence in Westbury and devised a plan to trap the scammer. When the suspect, later identified as Etienne Jackson, arrived at the home, police took him into custody without incident.
Jackson now faces charges of attempted grand larceny. The Nassau County Police Department is urging residents to remain vigilant and to alert vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors about potential scams.
