Elias Kemboi Korir Arrested for Fraud at WAYAAP NGO

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested Elias Kemboi Korir, a key official at the Woman and Youth Against Aids and Poverty (WAYAAP) NGO, for his involvement in multiple frauds targeting business enterprises.

On Tuesday, December 17, DCI confirmed that Korir was apprehended at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as he attempted to flee the country. Korir had been under investigation for his alleged role in a series of fraudulent activities, where he used his position at the NGO, which claims to support vulnerable groups, to deceive suppliers.

According to the DCI, Korir and his accomplice, another official at WAYAAP, tricked three suppliers into delivering goods worth over Ksh32.8 million. They claimed the items were for aid distribution, but instead, the goods were sold on the local market, and the officials became unreachable.

When the suppliers attempted to recover their goods or payment, they were met with intimidation and harassment. This led the suppliers to report the case to DCI headquarters, prompting a manhunt by the Directorate’s Operation Support Unit.

Korir will be presented at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, December 18, to face charges related to fraud and conspiracy.
