Five individuals have been convicted and sentenced for cybercrime offences by courts in Ilorin and Kwara State, Nigeria, following successful prosecution by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The convicted individuals—Ayinla Abiodun Abdulmajid, Yusuf Abdulazeez Onimisi, Muhammed Zayad Eneye, Abdulbasit Abdulmumeen, and Victor Onucheyo Anibe—were sentenced on July 14, 2025, by Justices Abimbola Awogboro, Sulaiman Akanbi, and Haleema Saleeman.
The convictions stemmed from separate charges involving internet fraud, impersonation, and obtaining money under false pretenses. In one case, Ayinla Abiodun Abdulmajid, using the alias “Michael Cavezza,” impersonated an individual on Google Hangout to defraud a foreign victim, Kirsty Reid, of $1,003. Justice Awogboro sentenced him to nine months in prison without an option of a fine. Abdulmajid was also ordered to forfeit $702, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, a Redmi phone, and an HP laptop to the federal government.
Yusuf Abdulazeez Onimisi was convicted of a similar offence and sentenced to three months in prison without a fine option. He must also forfeit $300 and a Samsung S31 phone. Muhammed Zayad Eneye was given 400 hours of community service and was ordered to forfeit the HP laptop used in the offence.
At the Kwara State High Court, Justice Sulaiman Akanbi sentenced Abdulbasit Abdulmumeen to two years’ imprisonment with the option of a ₦400,000 fine. Additionally, he was directed to sweep the court premises for two months under the supervision of the Nigerian Correctional Service. He also forfeits $145 and an iPhone 11. Victor Onucheyo Anibe was sentenced by Justice Haleema Saleeman to two years in prison with an option of a ₦600,000 fine. The court further ordered the forfeiture of ₦4 million in restituted funds, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and a Samsung phone.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, these convictions were based on overwhelming evidence including confessional statements, digital evidence, and recovered items. He noted that the EFCC remains committed to sanitizing Nigeria’s digital space and ensuring that cybercriminals are brought to justice. All five individuals pleaded guilty to the charges during their arraignment.
