EFCC Grills Delta State Accountant General Joy Enwa over N1.3 Trillion Scandal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has interrogated Joy Enwa, the Accountant General of Delta State, as part of an ongoing probe into the alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion linked to former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.

Enwa, along with several other officials including a former Director of Finance and Administration and a senior Government House official, is under investigation for the diversion of state funds. Sources from the EFCC indicate that the funds in question include a portion of the 13 percent derivation allocation designated for oil-producing states.

In November, Okowa himself was detained at the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office over allegations of using his position to funnel state funds for personal use. Investigators are also examining assets linked to the fraud, including shares in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Company and investments in the oil sector.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that Mrs. Enwa had been detained for questioning related to the alleged mismanagement of state funds. Other government officials have also been interrogated as part of the investigation.

Enwa, who served as Deputy Accountant General under Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, was appointed as the state’s Accountant General by Okowa in 2020. This is not her first brush with controversy—she was previously implicated in a N369 million fraud case involving other state officials and bank representatives in 2015.
