Durant Man Charged for Impersonating Law Enforcement Officer

A man from Durant, identified as Curtis Gaines, has been charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer following a bizarre incident on Highway 12. On Monday, while driving, Gaines activated blue lights that resembled those used by police vehicles, which were in fact attached to a Halloween mask hanging from his rearview mirror.

Unbeknownst to Gaines, the driver he attempted to pull over was off-duty Attala County Sheriff’s Deputy Braxton Goza. The deputy quickly recognized the situation and reported the incident.

As a result of his actions, Gaines faces several charges, including impersonating an officer, improper equipment, and possession of marijuana. The Attala County Sheriff’s Office continues to emphasize the seriousness of impersonating law enforcement, which can have dangerous implications for public safety.
