BELGRADE, Mont. — Dennis Lee Hurlbert, a plumber and owner of Belgrade Plumbing and Heating, has received a suspended prison sentence for committing insurance fraud. The 59-year-old was convicted for presenting a falsified certificate of liability insurance to a potential employer.
On May 16, 2024, Judge Andrew Breuner of Montana’s 18th Judicial District sentenced Hurlbert to five years at Montana State Prison, but his sentence was suspended. Instead, Hurlbert will be placed on formal probation for five years.
In addition to the probation, Hurlbert will begin a 30-day house arrest starting May 24, 2024, with electronic monitoring.
The case stems from an investigation by the Montana State Auditor’s Office, which revealed that in January 2022, Hurlbert provided a fake certificate of insurance to a prospective employer. The document falsely indicated that he held various insurance policies, including general liability, automobile liability, and workers’ compensation. The certificate was confirmed to be forged by the Bozeman insurance agency named on the document.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CSI) conducted the probe, uncovering the fraudulent certificate. Hurlbert pled guilty to the felony offense of Criminal Insurance Fraud.
Commissioner Downing expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the investigative agencies, underscoring that insurance fraud is a serious crime, and those involved will face significant legal consequences.
Conclusion: Hurlbert’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in business operations and the severe penalties for committing fraud in the state of Montana.
