Delhi Police Arrest Two Members of ‘Thak-Thak’ Gang, Solve Rs 1 Cr Diamond Theft

Delhi Police on Tuesday successfully solved a high-profile diamond theft case by arresting two members of the notorious ‘Thak-Thak’ gang, including a woman. The gang is accused of stealing diamond jewellery worth Rs 1 crore from a car in Agra.

The arrested individuals were identified as Kunal, aged 23, a resident of Madangir, Delhi, and Shweta (38) (name changed), residing in Inderpuri. The police managed to recover 23 of the 36 diamond articles stolen from the vehicle of a diamond merchant last week.

According to Ankit Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), the gang typically targets businessmen and jewellery shop owners. A formal complaint was filed at the Loha Mandi police station in Agra, reporting the theft of 36 diamond pieces, Rs 1 lakh in cash, and a laptop from the merchant’s car.

The gang, which has carried out similar crimes in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, has a history of criminal activities. Kunal was previously linked to five separate cases in Delhi, while Shweta was involved in a theft in Bhopal.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday morning when police received a tip-off about the gang’s activities and laid a trap in Sector 4, Pushp Vihar. At around 6:15 am, the police intercepted a woman walking on the street, and upon a search, recovered the stolen diamond jewellery. She later admitted that she and her accomplices had carried out the theft in Agra.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Kunal, and additional stolen jewellery was recovered from his possession. Chauhan explained that the gang operated in groups of two to four members, using the ‘thak-thak’ technique, in which they would distract victims before snatching valuables from their vehicles.
