Delhi Police recently arrested a man, identified as 31-year-old Soib, from Rishikesh for his alleged involvement in a high-profile jewellery theft in Lajpat Nagar, southeast Delhi. The stolen jewellery, which included gold and diamonds, was valued at Rs 1.5 crore.
Soib is also accused of stealing Rs 26,000 in cash from a store that sold newborn baby items. Police revealed that Soib had a criminal background and had previously been involved in eight other criminal cases. During the investigation, police also arrested two other individuals, Sumit Soni (30) and Manik Kadam (42), for allegedly receiving the stolen goods.
Following their arrests, police recovered 100 grams of diamonds, a 10-gram gold chain bought with the stolen funds, and 57 grams of high-quality gold that had been extracted from melted-down stolen jewellery.
The crime began when Soib initially attempted to rob a jewellery showroom on the night of January 14-15 but failed. Instead, he stole Rs 26,000 from a nearby store. On January 29, Soib returned to the jewellery shop, broke in by smashing a glass panel in the washroom, and took jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore.
CCTV footage, reviewed by the police, revealed that Soib arrived at Lajpat Nagar via a bike taxi from the Ring Road and was dropped off near the Lajpat Nagar Metro Station. The police tracked him down in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, and arrested him.
During questioning, Soib allegedly confessed to selling the stolen jewellery to Sumit Soni for Rs 6.60 lakh. Acting on this information, police raided a location in Madangir and arrested Soni, recovering some of the stolen jewellery from him.
