Davan Patel Arrested for Scamming Elderly Man of $70,000

Officials in Upshur County, Texas, arrested 38-year-old Davan Patel from Melissa on Wednesday after he allegedly scammed an 85-year-old man out of more than $70,000. According to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, the elderly victim was contacted on June 9 by someone impersonating an agent from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The scammer convinced the man he had warrants for his arrest and pressured him into handing over money.

Over several days, the victim paid the scammers a total of $70,000. However, he grew suspicious when they demanded even more funds. Acting on the victim’s report, law enforcement set up a trap. On June 12, Patel was apprehended at the victim’s home when he arrived to collect more money.

Patel has been charged with theft over $30,000 but less than $150,000 against an elderly individual and is currently being held in the Upshur County Jail. His bond has been set at $1 million.

Sheriff Larry Web advised the public to exercise caution and consult law enforcement if contacted by anyone demanding money. “If someone asks for money, it is best to contact the sheriff’s office or other authorities before taking action,” he said.
