Darren Doze Sentenced to 8 Years for Shooting His Brother

Plea deal reduces murder charge to aggravated assault

by Amelia Crawford

Darren Doze, 42, was sentenced to eight years in prison as part of a plea deal after being accused of fatally shooting his brother in Leon Valley in 2021. Doze, initially charged with murder, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. A separate assault family charge was likely dismissed in exchange for the plea deal.

In May 2021, Doze was arrested after he allegedly shot his 39-year-old brother, Ronald Doze, at their apartment in the Vista Del Rey complex. Police responded to the shooting at 5622 Evers Road, where they found Ronald bleeding from a gunshot wound to his upper thigh. He later died from his injuries.

Ronald Doze reportedly told officers that his brother shot him, and a witness described hearing a gunshot after Ronald had an argument with Darren. According to the witness, Darren fled the apartment after the shooting, apologizing for the incident. He explained that the shooting occurred after Ronald made unwanted advances toward the woman in the apartment.

At the time of the shooting, Doze was out on bail for a separate domestic violence case, which led to a violation of his bond conditions and the remanding of his bond.
