Champion Australian jockey Danny Nikolic and prominent lawyer Pat Lennon have been charged following an alleged burglary attempt in Melbourne. The pair were arrested at an address in Carlton, a suburb just outside the Melbourne CBD, around 2am on January 9.
According to Victoria Police, Nikolic, 50, and Lennon, 61, filled bags with luxury goods, including jewellery and designer handbags, before finding themselves trapped inside the property by deadlocked doors. Witnesses saw the two men breaking into the townhouse and alerted authorities, leading to a swift police response.
It’s alleged that the pair used a ladder to access the property’s roof from a neighbouring café before entering through a balcony. A second ladder was reportedly found in a laneway behind the house.
Victoria Police confirmed that both men were arrested and later charged with burglary and theft. Nikolic, a well-known jockey with multiple Group One wins, and Lennon, a high-profile criminal lawyer, are due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 25.
The arrest comes after a tumultuous history for the Nikolic family, with Danny’s brother, John, jailed in 2019 for smuggling drugs into Fiji, leading to international headlines.
