Dallas Mavericks Suspend Employee After Coach Darrell Armstrong’s Arrest

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks have suspended an unnamed employee after assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The Dallas Police Department responded to a call in the early hours of Saturday morning, where a preliminary investigation revealed Armstrong, 56, had an argument with a victim and struck the individual with a gun while threatening to shoot. Armstrong and the victim were known to each other.

While Dallas TV station WFAA reported that the victim was a woman, the police have not officially confirmed her identity. Armstrong posted bond after being booked Saturday morning.

Armstrong’s attorney, Larry Taylor, issued a statement saying that his firm was beginning its own investigation into the incident. He added, “We will have more to say about this incident in the coming days.”

The Mavericks acknowledged the incident and stated they were in the process of gathering more information. An NBA spokesperson confirmed that the league was also in contact with the Mavericks regarding the matter.

“The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings,” said the Mavericks. “This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this, we will allow the legal process to unfold and refrain from commenting further while proceedings are ongoing.”

Armstrong, who played 14 seasons in the NBA, spent two years with the Mavericks near the end of his career. He was a backup point guard on the 2005-06 Mavericks team that made it to the NBA Finals, although they were defeated by Miami. He has been part of the Mavericks coaching staff since 2008-09.
