Daitrez Birch Pleads Guilty to Murder in Wichita Trunk Body Case

WICHITA, Kan. — A 24-year-old Wichita man, Daitrez Birch, pleaded guilty to murder on Tuesday in connection with a case involving the discovery of a body in the trunk of a car earlier this year. Birch has been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and desecration of remains.

The victim, 39-year-old Kyce Barnes, was found in the trunk of a four-door Mercedes on August 21, 2023, in west Wichita, in the 8400 block of West Kellogg. Police reported that Barnes had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and his body was discovered along with blood-stained bedding in the trunk.

Birch, who was involved in the shooting death of Barnes, is scheduled for sentencing in February 2025.
