Couple Jailed for £700,000 Benefit Fraud Scheme

By Lorna Hughes

A couple, Wojciech Kowalski and Wiktoria Packowska, fraudulently claimed over £700,000 in benefits and were apprehended at the Channel Tunnel while attempting to flee the UK. The pair, both 28 and from Ilford, had created “multiple false identities,” including fake bank accounts, identity documents, and utility bills, leading to more than 80 fraudulent claims over three years.

Their illegal activities came to light on June 14, 2020, when they were stopped trying to leave the country. Police found £50,000 in cash hidden in Packowska’s leggings and an additional £12,000 in her handbag. Following their arrest, officers conducted a search of their home, uncovering a stash of mobile phones, bank cards, and documents tied to their fraudulent operations.

Initially released on bail, Kowalski and Packowska continued to claim benefits they weren’t entitled to, leading to their second arrest in August 2021. They ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud, possession of items for use in fraud, and possession of criminal property.

On June 24, they were sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court to four years in prison. Detective Constable Stuart Tracey emphasized that the couple had abused the benefits system, diverting funds meant for those in genuine need. Their deception was short-lived, and they now face the consequences of their actions.
