A man and woman were arrested this week after stealing over $200 worth of meat from Milam’s Market in Miami Springs, then fleeing the scene on a motorcycle, authorities reported.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 8:30 p.m. when Miguel Alejandro Monte Jovega, 26, from Hialeah, was seen on surveillance footage entering the supermarket, heading straight for the meat section. He placed several packages of meat into a basket and left the store without paying.
Amalia Gomez Alvarez, 34, was waiting outside the store on a motorcycle. She helped Monte Jovega by placing several stolen meat packages into her bag, while others were placed in his. When confronted by the store manager, the couple was ordered to return the stolen items. However, they fled the scene on the motorcycle, according to the arrest report.
The stolen meat included two packages of prime sirloin, six packages of flank steak, and two packages of grass-fed skirt steak, valued at $265.37.
Police identified the suspects through surveillance video and traced them to an apartment where the motorcycle was parked. Upon arrival, officers saw the couple move the motorcycle inside the apartment and lock the front door. When the apartment’s resident arrived and allowed officers entry, the couple was apprehended.
Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle had been reported stolen to the Miami-Dade Police Department. Both suspects now face charges of vehicle theft, retail theft, and resisting an officer without violence. Monte Jovega also faces a charge of petty theft from a merchant. At the time of her arrest, Gomez Alvarez was out on felony bail.
As of Friday morning, both suspects remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
