Corey Hamel Sentenced to 26 Years for Attempted Murder of Maine Deputy

Hamel Pleads Guilty After Shooting Androscoggin County Sgt. Randy Williams

by Sophia Bennett

Auburn, Maine – Corey Hamel, 43, of Maine, has been sentenced to 26 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder for shooting an Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputy during a February 2024 incident in Minot.

The incident occurred when sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance complaint on Woodman Hill Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered a house on fire and began assisting residents to safety. That’s when Hamel, positioned at the end of the driveway, opened fire, striking Sgt. Randy Williams in the leg.

The shooting prompted a confrontation between Hamel and law enforcement officers from Androscoggin County and Mechanic Falls. Hamel was ultimately apprehended and taken into custody. Sgt. Williams, who underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his upper right leg, was released later that same week.

Hamel, who has a criminal history dating back to 1999, including a conviction for domestic violence assault in 2020, will serve 26 years behind bars for his actions.
