DES MOINES, Iowa – A Des Moines man wanted on multiple domestic violence-related warrants was arrested Thursday afternoon after resisting officers, resulting in minor injuries to two police officers.
Attempted Escape and Struggle
At around 3:30 p.m., officers located 30-year-old Corey Carson near E. 26th Street and E. University Avenue. When he noticed police approaching, Carson fled on foot, then took off on a bicycle before ditching it and running again.
Officers deployed a taser, but it was ineffective. When they caught up to Carson near E. 28th Street, a physical struggle ensued, captured in a bystander’s video posted to social media. The footage shows officers punching Carson as they attempted to take him into custody.
Two additional law enforcement officers who were part of a task force in the area assisted in the arrest.
Arrest Warrants and Injuries
Carson was wanted on multiple domestic abuse assault warrants, with a female victim reporting injuries in prior incidents. He also had 12 warrants for violating a no-contact order.
During the arrest, two Des Moines officers suffered minor lacerations.
Investigation into Use of Force
According to DMPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek, the video shared online shows about 80 seconds of what was a six-minute altercation. As per standard police policy, the department will review officers’ use of force during the incident.
