A 32-year-old Chinese national, Huang Min, has been arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, for his involvement in a large-scale sports-related fraud scheme. The arrest was made on Thursday in the Thung Mahamek area of the Sathon district by immigration police. Huang, who holds dual Chinese and Cambodian nationality, was wanted by Chinese authorities for defrauding investors in a sports gambling scheme that caused damages amounting to approximately 2.5 billion baht ($500 million USD).
Huang Min’s fraudulent activities began in March 2022, when he, along with accomplices, set up a platform called “Wanhe Football” to deceive individuals into investing in a new sports-related venture. Operating under the name of a group called “Zhonghe,” the perpetrators misled investors into believing they would profit from the scheme. Between March 2022 and April 2023, numerous individuals fell victim to the scam, resulting in significant financial losses.
The Criminal Court in China issued an arrest warrant for Huang Min on December 9, 2023, after Chinese authorities discovered his involvement in the fraudulent scheme. After fleeing China, Huang used a Cambodian passport to enter Thailand. The Chinese embassy in Bangkok requested Thailand’s assistance in apprehending the suspect, which led to his arrest.
The Thai Immigration Bureau confirmed that Huang Min would be extradited to China to face charges of public fraud. Pol Maj Gen Phanthana Nutchanart, the commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in bringing criminals to justice and ensuring they face accountability for their actions.
Huang Min’s arrest serves as a reminder of the global efforts made by law enforcement agencies to combat transnational crime and protect the financial security of individuals worldwide. His extradition will allow the Chinese authorities to pursue legal action against him for his role in causing significant harm to numerous victims.
