TV auctioneer Charles Hanson was arrested on June 14, 2023, on suspicion of assaulting his wife, Rebecca Hanson, after a decade of alleged domestic violence. Body-worn camera footage played in Derby Crown Court showed Hanson visibly upset, asking police officers, “Am I dreaming?” upon his arrest.
The 46-year-old, known for his appearances on Bargain Hunt and Flog It!, was charged with controlling or coercive behavior, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault by beating. In the footage, Hanson is heard telling the officer that he was “completely shocked” by the arrest and questioned, “Why?” He appeared disoriented, leaning against a wall outside his home in Quarndon, Derbyshire.
The video captured him expressing his disbelief, saying, “I am staying the night [in custody], aren’t I?” He added, “I’m so sad, let me just get my bearings,” before repeatedly asking if he was “dreaming.”
Hanson’s arrest follows allegations of physical and emotional abuse during his marriage. His case is now being examined in court, where the jury will consider the severity of the charges against him.
