Broward County, FL – Criminal charges against Dr. Karlton Odell Johnson, a Broward County principal, have been officially dropped after his January arrest for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Traffic Stop and Arrest
On January 7, Florida Highway Patrol troopers pulled over Johnson, 58, after noticing his gray Kia Stinger with dark tinted windows and an altered license plate reading “AYOORD” on Florida’s Turnpike.
During the stop, Johnson reportedly flashed a wallet with a gold star and a Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) badge, claiming to be a reserve deputy. He also allegedly cited a connection to basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal.
However, troopers became suspicious and verified with BSO officials that Johnson had no affiliation with law enforcement. The badge he displayed was an honorary one, and he lacked a CCN number, a unique ID for officers.
Legal Dismissal
On Tuesday, a Florida court dismissed the charge, citing legal precedent that verbal claims alone do not constitute impersonation unless the individual actively performs law enforcement duties.
