In a dramatic breakthrough, Nungambakkam police arrested Chandra Pareyar, a Nepali national, in connection with a burglary that involved the theft of 1.5 kg of gold, diamond jewels weighing 50 carats, Rs10 lakh in cash, three luxury watches, and a mobile phone from a house in Lake Area, Nungambakkam.
The accused had previously worked as a driver for the house owner, SMH Sulaiman (67). The crime was uncovered when Sulaiman returned home on January 3 after being away since December 21. Upon his return, he discovered that his house had been broken into, and several valuables were missing.
Following a police complaint, authorities examined CCTV footage, which helped identify Chandra Pareyar, who was once employed as Sulaiman’s driver. Investigators revealed that Chandra, familiar with the house layout, had plotted the burglary with accomplices. He used his access to break in and steal the items.
Stolen gold jewels weighing 14.3 grams were recovered from Chandra during the investigation. The remaining suspects are believed to be hiding in Nepal. Chandra was remanded in judicial custody, and authorities continue to track down his accomplices.
