Quick-thinking bank employees at a cooperative bank’s Chakan branch successfully foiled an attempted ATM theft on Thursday, apprehending one suspect while his accomplice managed to escape.
The incident began when security guard Prakash Walunj, monitoring the CCTV feed, noticed a masked man tampering with the ATM inside the kiosk. Walunj immediately alerted cashier Sayaji Barge, who, along with branch manager Pallavi Phadke, rushed to the scene and caught the suspect in the act.
The arrested man has been identified as Lakhvir Singh Baldev Singh (29), a resident of Bhatinda, Punjab. Investigating officer Shivaji Chavan from the Chakan police station revealed that Singh had a criminal history in other cities.
At around 11 am, Singh had opened the ATM’s panel with a duplicate key, but was apprehended before he could proceed with the theft. The accomplice managed to escape, and the police are now conducting further investigations.
