CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A 20-year-old Cedar Rapids man, Grant M. Ajango, is facing serious charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in the restroom of a Jimmy John’s restaurant in Iowa City on August 5.
According to the criminal complaint, Ajango was encountered by the victim when she entered the women’s restroom around 2:30 a.m. The complaint alleges that Ajango grabbed the victim, slammed her against the wall, and assaulted her without consent.
The victim was able to retrieve her cellphone, which had fallen from her pocket, and sent a “help” text to her friends outside. The friends, along with restaurant employees, forced open the restroom door and found Ajango with his pants around his ankles, holding the victim against the wall.
Ajango reportedly attempted to flee the scene but was detained by the victim’s friends and restaurant staff until police arrived.
He has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, and false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. Ajango is currently being held in the Johnson County Jail with a $60,000 bond.
