Cecilia Sala Arrested in Tehran After Swiss-Iranian Arms Dealer’s Detention

Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old Italian journalist, was arrested in Tehran on December 19, 2024, amid reports suggesting that her detention was a retaliation for the recent arrest of a Swiss-Iranian businessman suspected of arms dealing. The businessman was detained in Milan after a US-issued warrant. Sala, who works as a war correspondent for Il Foglio and presents Chora Media’s daily podcast, was reportedly held in solitary confinement for a week after her arrest.

The US State Department has indicated that the arrest of Sala may be tied to the detention of the businessman in Italy, with Iranian authorities potentially targeting her as part of an ongoing diplomatic standoff. Sala’s case highlights the growing tensions between Iran and the West, particularly in matters related to international security and arms trafficking.
