Carthage Woman Arrested on Multiple Fraud Charges

Carthage, NC — A 46-year-old woman from Carthage, Rene Smith, was arrested on Thursday following an investigation into multiple fraudulent charges. According to Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields, the sheriff’s department received reports of unauthorized charges made using a victim’s debit/credit card in the Carthage area.

Smith was charged with one count of felony identity theft, one count of felony obtaining property by false pretense, and three counts of felony computer fraud. The investigation revealed that Smith had used the victim’s information for financial gain.

She was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Moore County Detention Center under a $35,000 secured bond. Smith is scheduled for her first court appearance on February 28 in Moore County District Court. As per legal procedure, Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
