Carrie Musselman, 48, a chiropractor from Eureka, was convicted of defrauding Medicare and other insurance companies, stealing over $1.5 million, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois. Musselman used deceptive practices to fraudulently claim reimbursements for services she did not perform or misrepresented.
As part of the scheme, Musselman falsely claimed that licensed physicians, rather than nurse practitioners or physician assistants, were performing certain services. This deception resulted in higher reimbursements for her practice.
Musselman’s most lucrative fraudulent claim involved electroacupuncture, which she falsely billed as a surgically implanted neurostimulator, a procedure that would not have qualified for Medicare reimbursement without the false representation. Additionally, Musselman billed for neurostimulators and allergy injections that were never administered, sending patients home with oral drops instead, which were unapproved by the FDA.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed that Musselman faces up to 10 years for health care fraud and up to 20 years for each wire fraud charge. Her sentencing is set for June 24.
