Calgary Stampeders DB Demerio Houston Faces Misdemeanour Domestic Violence Charge

Calgary Stampeders defensive back Demerio Houston is facing a misdemeanour domestic violence charge in North Carolina, following an alleged assault on his wife in November 2024. The 28-year-old football player is accused of hitting his wife in the face with a suitcase after an argument on November 21.

According to court documents obtained by 3DownNation, a warrant for Houston’s arrest was issued later that day, citing the seriousness of the offence and the potential risk of harm. The court documents further revealed that Houston had a history of domestic violence against his wife, though she had been previously reluctant to come forward due to fear of financial dependence and her safety.

Houston was arrested by Gastonia Police Department officers shortly after midnight on November 22, 2024. He was released two days later on a written promise to appear, with the condition that he not threaten, assault, or harass the alleged victim.

None of the allegations have been proven in court. Houston’s public defender, Daniel Wilkes, declined to comment on the case.

The maximum penalty for misdemeanour domestic violence in North Carolina includes up to 150 days in jail, along with fines and probation. Houston is scheduled for a disposition hearing on March 20, 2025, before Judge Aretha Blake.

Houston played 15 games for the Calgary Stampeders in 2024, where he had a strong season, recording 74 tackles, five interceptions, and one sack. Prior to joining the Stampeders, he spent three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and earned All-CFL recognition in 2023.

The CFL’s gender-based violence policy mandates that all players undergo domestic violence education. The league commissioner will determine any disciplinary actions on a case-by-case basis, including possible fines, counselling, suspension, or a lifetime ban from the league.

Both the Stampeders and the CFL have not yet commented on the situation. The CFL Players’ Association also declined to provide a statement ahead of the league’s verdict.
