Brooksville Man Arrested for Drug Trafficking After Fleeing from Deputies

On December 13, 2024, a routine traffic stop in Brooksville led to the arrest of Steven Wendt, 35, on drug trafficking charges. Deputies from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, including D. Barlow and S. Belmonte, stopped Wendt, a bicyclist, in the area of Alberta Street and Tascosa Avenue.

During the stop, Wendt provided deputies with a false name. He then attempted to flee by riding off on his bicycle, but deputies quickly caught up and detained him.

Further investigation revealed Wendt’s true identity and the discovery of two active Hernando County warrants for violation of probation. A search of Wendt uncovered two baggies containing 17.5 grams of methamphetamine, along with drug paraphernalia. In his backpack, deputies also found a scale, indicating potential involvement in drug distribution.

Wendt was arrested and charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting an officer without violence, and providing a false name to law enforcement. He is currently being held without bond at the Hernando County Detention Center.

Authorities are asking anyone with additional information to contact Hernando County Crime Stoppers. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
