Brian Costello Arrested After Alleged Theft and Assault at Boulder Whole Foods

Boulder, CO – Brian Costello, 35, was arrested on Sunday after allegedly stealing groceries from Whole Foods and assaulting an officer. Costello, who was banned from the store, tried to leave with unpaid items before attacking an off-duty police officer and a store security guard.

At approximately 5 p.m., Costello was spotted walking through the store with a basket full of stolen groceries. An off-duty officer, who was working security at the store, recognized Costello and attempted to stop him. Costello, in an effort to flee, allegedly attacked the officer and a nearby security guard.

The officer immediately called for backup, and police arrived on the scene to detain Costello. The officer sustained minor injuries to her hand during the altercation and was treated at a local hospital. Despite the injury, the officer’s quick response helped prevent further escalation of the situation.

Costello now faces a series of serious charges, including second-degree burglary, second-degree assault on a peace officer, and robbery. Additionally, he is charged with harassment, interfering with a police officer, and resisting arrest.

The Boulder Police Department has underscored the seriousness of these charges and the risks that officers face when dealing with violent detainees. Local authorities have reminded the public of the importance of cooperating with law enforcement to prevent such incidents from occurring.

Costello was taken to the Boulder County Jail after receiving medical attention for any injuries sustained during the altercation. Investigations into the incident continue as the Boulder Police Department works to gather more details surrounding the event.
