Jaruwan Vanasin, 79, and her daughter Nalin Vanasin, 51, have surrendered to police in response to charges of public fraud linked to Thonburi Healthcare Group (THG), founded by Dr. Boon Vanasin. The pair, who are facing allegations tied to fraudulent medical investment schemes, declined to comment as they appeared in court.
Their lawyer stated that they denied all allegations, insisting their signatures had been forged, and they were not involved in the alleged scams. Their surrender comes after a court issued arrest warrants for Dr. Boon, 86, his wife, and daughter on charges including fraudulent borrowing, money laundering, and issuing bad cheques. These charges stem from an extensive fraud investigation.
According to the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB), Dr. Boon is accused of using his reputation as a successful healthcare executive to promote medical ventures in Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, convincing investors to put over 16 billion baht into the projects. However, many of these projects failed to deliver, and subsequent payments were missed, causing investors to file complaints.
Police also revealed that Dr. Boon left Thailand for China on September 29 after the authorities began investigating him. His involvement in another fraud case in 2022, related to false claims about Covid-19 vaccine deliveries, had already drawn regulatory scrutiny.
In addition to the Vanasins, police arrested two women linked to the network of fraudulent activity at a law firm in Nonthaburi. They were also charged with fraud and fraudulent borrowing.
