In a serious crime in the Birkera area of Burla, police arrested a 35-year-old man, Birsa Kusuma, on Sunday night for allegedly attempting to murder 25-year-old Nityananda Ranbida with an arrow last week. The victim is currently receiving treatment at Vimsar Hospital, Burla.
On May 27, Ranbida was visiting his sister-in-law’s house in Birkera to attend a funeral when he was struck in the abdomen by an arrow, sustaining critical injuries. Police investigations revealed that Kusuma had been harassing the victim’s sister-in-law through repeated phone calls. When Ranbida confronted Kusuma about the harassment, Kusuma allegedly retaliated by attacking him with the arrow.
“We have arrested Kusuma on charges of attempted murder. Further investigation is underway,” said IIC Bikram Kumar Bhuyan of Kalunga police outpost.
Ranbida was first admitted to Rourkela Government Hospital before being transferred to Vimsar for specialized treatment. The arrest followed a police probe based on the victim’s statement and a subsequent FIR. Kusuma was taken into custody after interrogation.
