The police in Adilabad have arrested five individuals from Bihar, suspected to be part of an inter-state gang involved in large-scale cyber fraud. The gang was using old cell phones and SIM cards for various scams, including fake job offers, lottery frauds, and banking scams through OTPs.
Adilabad SP Akhil Mahajan revealed that the gang’s leader, Tabarak, remains absconding. The group was caught in Rickshaw Colony while attempting to buy old phones and SIM cards. The police seized 2,125 phones, 600 batteries, and 107 SIM cards from the accused, who had traveled on motorbikes, tricking people into trading their phones for household items.
The gang, which had operated across multiple states, including Karnataka, used over 10,000 old phones in cybercrimes. The arrested individuals are Merajul, Mehboob Alam, Mohammad Jamal, Md. Uzair, and Abdullah. Special teams are being formed to track down Tabarak, the gang’s mastermind.
The police advised the public to be cautious of scams involving old phone buyers or anyone asking for OTPs.
