The Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar has successfully dismantled a chain-snatching gang, arresting the mastermind from Uttar Pradesh, along with two local members of the gang.
The Special Squad of the Commissionerate Police arrested the suspects after a series of incidents in the Twin Cities. The accused have been identified as Ram Kumar from Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh, Akash Samal from Cuttack Sadar, and Sheetal Behera from Bidanasi.
The police began investigating after the first complaint was filed at the Kharvel Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar in April. A second case was registered a few weeks later, leading to further arrests. DCP Prateek Singh explained that the gang, known as the Bawariya tribe, had been active in the Twin Cities, committing multiple chain-snatching incidents. The gang typically travels by train, steals bikes, and uses them to carry out crimes in various cities.
Ram Kumar, the mastermind of the operation, was arrested with two stolen gold chains and a motorcycle. In a follow-up case, Saheed Nagar police apprehended Akash Samal and Sheetal Behera, recovering two more gold chains from their possession.
These arrests highlight the police’s continued efforts to combat organized crime and bring criminals to justice in Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas.
