Two brothers, both employed as Information Technology (IT) engineers, have been accused of orchestrating a major scam in Bhubaneswar by impersonating ‘Samsung India’. Chandan Kumar Bhuyan, one of the accused, was arrested on Thursday by a team from the Airfield Police Station. He is a resident of the Bharatpur locality in Bhubaneswar.
The brothers allegedly defrauded individuals of over Rs 3 Crore. They created a fake website, ‘Samsung Pay India,’ which they used to offer enticing investment opportunities, claiming lucrative returns. Many people were lured into investing large sums of money, with the suspects collecting more than Rs 3 Crore before going incommunicado.
A complaint filed by a victim at the Airfield Police Station prompted the investigation. Chandan Kumar Bhuyan has been taken into custody, and the probe is ongoing.
SC Patra, a complainant, revealed that his acquaintances were among the victims, with one losing Rs 35 lakh and his brother-in-law Rs 73 lakh. “The duo had set up a fake website, promising high returns on investments. To my knowledge, they’ve scammed several individuals for over Rs 3 crore,” said Patra.
Initially, for two months, the suspects paid interest on the investments, but they eventually stopped. Patra, in an effort to verify the address listed on the website, traveled to New Delhi, where he discovered the scam.
