Belle Glade Woman Accused of Staging Slip-and-Fall for Insurance

BELLE GLADE, Fla. (CBS12) — A Belle Glade woman, Leverne Williams, 70, has been accused of faking a slip-and-fall accident at a Winn-Dixie grocery store in an attempt to claim insurance money. The incident occurred on May 30, 2023, when Williams allegedly fell on a dark liquid in the store, resulting in her being taken to Lakeside Medical Center for injuries.

Following a letter from the Spencer Morgan Law Firm on July 21, 2023, accusing the store of negligence, Winn-Dixie launched an investigation. Surveillance footage from the store showed that the spill originated from a water bottle Williams herself unscrewed, casting doubt on her claims.

The footage also revealed that Williams appeared to deliberately position herself to fall and later scooted toward the spill while moving her foot in the liquid, raising further suspicion.

Williams denied opening the bottle, claiming she couldn’t due to a burned finger. However, the investigation revealed this wasn’t her first slip-and-fall claim—she had previously filed a similar case against Walmart.

The case was transferred to the Florida Department of Financial Services, where officials concluded that Williams had staged the fall and charged her with insurance fraud.
