The murder of Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village, occurred on December 9. Deshmukh was abducted, tortured, and murdered after attempting to intervene in an extortion bid targeting an energy company overseeing a windmill project in the area.

Walmik Karad, an associate of Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde, has also been arrested in connection with the extortion plot.

To ensure the arrest of the remaining accused, the police formed multiple teams and utilized informants and technical tools to track down the suspects. The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further questioning as the probe continues.
