A Bangladeshi national was arrested by police in South Dinajpur on Saturday night after living in the area for almost a year under a fake identity. The man, identified as Rabiul Islam, had been residing in the Kumarganj region, where he was found to have forged an Aadhar card to conceal his true nationality.
In connection with the arrest, Khailrul Mondal, the individual who had been sheltering Islam in his house, was also taken into police custody. Both were arrested by a team from the Kumarganj police station after a raid at Dangarhat village. Police are now investigating the duo’s motives and the possibility of other fraudulent activities.
Sources revealed that Islam had presented a fake Aadhar card during his stay, which he used to blend into local society. A local resident, Sariful Rahaman, recalled how Islam had asked him to rent a place but did not verify the provided address, leading Rahaman to refuse the offer. It was only after his arrest that it became clear Islam was a Bangladeshi national.
Islam, who had been working as a mason, had traveled extensively across India, and locals mentioned that he had been living in the area without anyone suspecting his true identity.
However, Khailrul Mondal’s daughter, Khaleda Bibi, claimed that her father was falsely implicated and denied any knowledge of Islam’s activities. According to her, her father had not knowingly sheltered the Bangladeshi national.
The case is still under investigation, with police officials from Dakshin Dinajpur taking charge. Chinmay Mitta, the Superintendent of Police, confirmed the arrests and stated that the investigation would continue. The Balurghat court has granted five days of police custody for both Islam and Mondal.
