Baba, Lulu, and Zuwena, three individuals linked to a notorious human trafficking operation, were arrested in Bangkok as part of a crackdown on exploitation involving African women. The gang, known as “Madam,” coerced women into prostitution in entertainment venues along Sukhumvit Road.
The arrests were made by police from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), starting with Baba, a Malian man, who was apprehended in Nong Khai province. Two Tanzanian women, Lulu and Zuwena, were arrested in Bangkok on December 2. These arrests mark a significant step in the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Justice and DSI to tackle human trafficking in Thailand.
Police Major Siriwish Kasemsap, head of the DSI’s Human Trafficking Bureau, described the tactics of the “Madam” gang, who confiscated earnings from the women and coerced them into covering travel expenses. Disturbingly, the traffickers also used black magic superstitions to control the victims.
The three suspects have been formally charged with participation in a transnational human trafficking network. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are determined to uncover the full scope of the trafficking operation and bring all involved to justice.
In a related case, Phuket Immigration Control Centre officers arrested four Ugandan and Tanzanian women for prostitution in the Patong area of Phuket. Local complaints had alerted authorities to the women offering services to foreign tourists in the area.
