Asante Kwaku Berko Extradited for Bribery Charges in US

Asante Kwaku Berko, the former Managing Director of Ghana’s Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States to face charges related to bribery and money laundering. Berko, a dual citizen of the U.S. and Ghana, is accused of orchestrating bribes to Ghanaian officials while employed at Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

Berko will appear in federal court in Brooklyn today before Magistrate Judge Lois Bloom. He faces an indictment that includes violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and money laundering charges. The allegations center on bribing Ghanaian government officials to secure a power plant deal and laundering the payments through the U.S. financial system.

His extradition took place on July 15, following his arrest in the UK on November 3, 2022, based on an Interpol Diffusion Notice.
