On July 12, 2024, at around 1:00 p.m., Detective Lieutenant Derric Neal, while working off-duty security at Walmart Supercenter (5501 South Olive Street), was approached by the Loss Prevention Supervisor regarding a series of thefts. The supervisor provided video footage identifying two suspects: 31-year-old Jermaine Scott and 27-year-old Montel Vanderbilt. Both men had allegedly used reloadable Visa cards over the past month to steal from the self-checkout machines.
The Loss Prevention Supervisor explained that Scott and Vanderbilt executed their scam by pretending to buy low-cost items while loading varying amounts onto the Visa debit cards. They would then cancel the transaction, receiving refunds for both the card amount and cash, effectively doubling their money. In the past 30 days, the duo reportedly stole around $12,985.28 from multiple Walmart locations in Stuttgart, Monticello, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
On July 15, 2024, the Loss Prevention Supervisor provided updated video footage and the license plate number of the vehicle associated with the suspects. Detective Dante Nicholson was assigned to the case and successfully located the vehicle. Along with other officers from the Pine Bluff Police Department, he pursued the car. The driver, Montel Vanderbilt, attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended. He was found in possession of suspected narcotics, while passenger Jermaine Scott surrendered immediately when the vehicle stopped.
Both Scott and Vanderbilt were interviewed and subsequently arrested. They were taken to the W.C. Dub Brassell Detention Center on charges of Felony Theft, Felony Fleeing, three counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle to Facilitate a Crime. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may follow.
