Arrest of Deportees in US Aircraft’s Return to India: Murder, Sexual Assault Cases

A group of 116 deported illegal immigrants arrived in India aboard a US military aircraft on Saturday, and several of them were arrested upon their arrival at Amritsar airport. Among them were two individuals from Punjab, accused of murder, and one from Haryana, charged with sexual assault on a minor.

The fourth deportee, a man from Punjab, was detained in connection with two pending FIRs for dacoity and snatching. Sandeep Singh and Pardeep Singh, cousins from Rajpura, Punjab, both involved in a murder case from June 2023, were taken into police custody for three days in Patiala. Sahil Verma, hailing from Pehowa in Haryana’s Kurukshetra, was arrested for fleeing the country after being accused of sexual assault in 2022. Verma had spent time in Vietnam and Italy before unlawfully entering the US last month. He now faces charges, including criminal intimidation, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The Haryana police have transported Sahil to Kurukshetra.

The murder case against the two Punjab cousins stemmed from a complaint filed by Harmajot Singh of Mandoli village, Patiala. Singh alleged that they were involved in the murder of one of his relatives. Meanwhile, Gurwinder Singh, a 27-year-old from Ludhiana’s Sasrali village, is expected to be arrested in connection with a 2021 snatching case after going missing. Additionally, an FIR for dacoity remains pending against him in Faridkot.

The ongoing investigations are unfolding as the authorities work to address these serious charges against the deportees.
